Auto-suggest & Tab in OpenOffice.org Calc

uNeedStuff - Sat, 08/08/2009 - 19:20

Want to use the auto suggest, but don’t want to lose the ability to move to the right and still be able to use the enter key to take you down and to the beginning of the row or place you started tabbing at? Here’s the answer. This one took me forever to figure out, and much frustration. Hope this saves you some.

This has driven me crazy for EVER! Your typing and the auto-complete pops up possibilities for what you want in the cell. I like this, I use the same information in columns all the time, however up to now the only way I had found to select one and move to the next cell to the right was to use the right-arrow key. Using the right-arrow key however stops Calc from taking you back to the beginning of the row below the row your currently on when you hit Enter. This would drive me crazy. Turn auto-suggest off or lose the Enter to the beginning down one row thing.

Finally figured out how to have both within easy keyboard reach.

I have found a simple fix for this. Edit the keyboard to allow you to set Ctrl-A to do the same thing as Ctrl-Backspace, which allows you to have the tab like action without losing the auto suggest.

Ctrl-Backspace navigates to the current cell and allows you to continue to use your Tab key for right movement, and leaving the Enter key to take you down a row and back to where you started using the Tab key.

Ctrl-Backspace however isn’t an easy Keyboard short-cut or at least it isn’t for my hands, so I added Ctrl-A to do the same thing. A is right next to the Tab key so it’s a fairly fast keyboard click.

Tools>Customize>Keyboard>
Under Functions
In Category, select Navigation
Function, select To Current Cell

Under Shortcut keys find Ctrl-A click Modify, click OK Cool

Good Blogging Practices – Formatting

uNeedStuff - Mon, 05/25/2009 - 15:10

Copy & Pasting without Formatting

Allowing your blogging system to handle the formatting on your blog is a good idea. This leaves the font to your theme choice. No matter what theme you switch to, if you have left the formatting to the code behind the scenes, your blog will look great, and just like it should.

Bolding, italics, quote blocks, are all there for you to use. If you want something blue; ask yourself if you want it to be blue always. If you just want it emphasized use bold, or if this is something you do often, add a class for it. Utilize the H tags, and any other coding available.

If you want the entire font your theme is using changed, edit your css files for the current theme. If you not sure how to do that, ask your webmaster, or hire a professional to help.

If changes are made to your CSS file make sure the changes are noted; so they can be carried over when updating or switching your themes. A good webmaster understands this.

When you want to type in Word, or copy from the web, make sure to paste into your blogging system with plain text. You can do this by utilizing the buttons in your system, or with Notepad. The following video shows how to do that.

Circuit City Back Online

uNeedStuff - Sat, 05/23/2009 - 13:09

Circuit City is back online, but it’s not really Circuit City, not the Circuit City I loved. I just can’t understand what happened, and why anyone would have shopped at Best Buy over them. Their return policy was so much better, and they actually listened to you. This new Circuit City is just a name. Their return policy is exactly the same as Tiger Direct’s. Which means if it ain’t broke they ain’t taking it back. I don’t like spending $300 on a camera, and finding it not to my liking, and not being able to return it. I’ll shop at Amazon. If your pictures suck, but there isn’t really anything wrong with the camera, then your out of luck, or you have to pay a restocking fee. So either stick to stores you can actually visit, or buy from Amazon. I use Tiger Direct, when I know I want something, and they do fill a niche. They normally have the odd ball thing for my computer I’m looking for. I just know I better want it, or it better be broke if I want to return it.

This is another sad day for me. I miss Circuit City, and hoped that Systemax Inc. who bought the name might have honored the great things about Circuit City, but this is just a renamed Tiger Direct.

Spelling or lack there of..

uNeedStuff - Mon, 05/18/2009 - 13:57

If you can’t spell, how do you find the word you need? This is a problem I have had my entire life. I was blessed with a mother who was an excellent speller, so until her passing I just asked her.

Now with the advent of the computer I can rely most of the time on the spell checker, and I use a wonderful program called Tiny Spell for everywhere I type that doesn’t include one. Actually I use Tiny Spell even when a program has a spell checker as it’s learned how I spell something and normally offers me the correct word faster, and more accurately then any other one.

When Tiny Spell fails me, Google will typically come to the rescue; I just type in a short sentence using the word I can’t spell, and it will offer me a corrected option. I do typically define: the word to make sure there aren’t tons of us out there miss spelling the word.

However, once in a while I have a word I just can’t figure out how to even start spelling, or possibly I’m miss pronouncing it, so I’m so far from how the word is spelt, that nothing can help. Today I had one of those words. I was posting over at Tarot for Life and wanted to say something posed a condry … nope that isn’t correct, conderary, nope not that either, none of the suggestions helped, and neither did my sentence in Google of “that poses quite a conderary”. Well after I even pulled out the old fashion paper dictionary and read through con words, I was sure wishing for my mother, when I thought about how I was pronouncing the word and realized it was really should be pronounced quan, not con, maybe I was mixing up the pronunciation with contrary, who knows, I was just glad the quan came to me, and I then knew the word was quandry oops or quandary, thank the Goddess for Tiny Spell!

Browsers, browser… which one to add

uNeedStuff - Thu, 05/14/2009 - 22:49

I love Firefox, it does everything I need from a brower with the add-ons I’ve installed, however how I work, I need to run two copies. I use Google Doc’s, and a few other sites that you can only be logged into with one user name per browser. I had tried using a bit of coding to run 2 separate instances of Firefox, however I ran into a few issues so needed to use a completely different browser. Which one to use. I tried Safri, IE, Opera, and Lunascape. Didn’t really like any of them then I found Flock.

Flock is basically Firefox for the social web animal. I’m not using any of the fancy stuff, but it runs like Firefox, and can use the same add-ons, so I can run two browser windows with Google Doc each with their own user. So if you need to be signed into a site under two different user names, and love Firefox, may I suggest Flock.

Unblock Images in Firefox

uNeedStuff - Wed, 05/13/2009 - 17:42

Had to help a client see images on her site today. Had me a bit perplexed in the beginning, however I figured it had to do with her browser and not with the site, and that was correct.

She had sent me an email that she had deleted all the images from a page, which kinda freaked me out for a bit, but they were there when I accessed the site.

So how do you fix this perplexing situation?

From with in Firefox (I’m using 3 currently)
Tools>Options>Content Tab
Make sure Load images automatically is checked, if this wasn’t check, and you weren’t seeing any images your done, click OK

If you aren’t seeing images on a specific site then click on the Exceptions button across from Load images automatically.
Look for the site address your trying to unblock, and click Remove Site, if you have more then one site, and you want to unblock them all click Remove All Sites, click Close & OK and you should now see the images again.
